How can one start a career in IT today? What do recruiters look for? What should an entry-level CV look like, how can one prepare for a pre-screening, and how has the job market changed amidst the war?

These were the topics discussed with students from groups PI-231 and PI-232 during a meeting with a guest speaker—Kateryna Kohanska, Senior Talent Acquisition Manager at Snotor.

🎯 A key focus of the meeting was pursuing a career in the IT sector within the current Ukrainian reality.

The war has had a profound impact not only on the country as a whole but also on the tech sector and the job market. Working conditions, the level of competition, corporate hiring approaches, and candidate requirements have all shifted. Consequently, it is now crucial for aspiring IT professionals to go beyond acquiring technical knowledge; they must also understand how the real-world market functions and what employers expect from candidates.

💬 During the session, students explored modern recruitment practices, the process of landing a first job, and navigating the initial stages of the selection process.

Special attention was given to preparing for pre-screening: crafting an impactful CV, effectively showcasing personal projects and skills, researching a company prior to an interview, preparing a brief self-introduction, and being ready for professional communication in English.

📄 It was also noted that when securing a first job, technical skills listed on a resume are not the only deciding factor. Recruiters also evaluate a candidate’s motivation, academic performance, practical experience, personal projects, willingness to grow, and English language proficiency. 🤖 We also touched upon how the recruitment process itself has evolved. Today, it involves much more than just reviewing resumes and conducting interviews. Companies now utilize diverse candidate sourcing channels, structured assessments, analytics, automation, and AI tools—though professional judgment and human interaction remain paramount.

🏢 For the students, hearing these insights directly from an industry representative was particularly valuable. Snotor maintains an ongoing partnership with the college, offering students opportunities for technical and pre-graduation internships, where they gain real-world experience working within an IT company.

🤝 The meeting was organized by Vasyl Serhiyovych Kohut, Head of the Software Engineering Department.

Such meetings allow students to view their profession beyond just academic subjects and technologies; they gain an understanding of the entire journey toward landing their first job—from their studies and personal projects to crafting a CV, navigating pre-screening and technical interviews, and finally receiving that first job offer.

After all, our goal goes beyond simply teaching students how to code.

🚀 It is crucial to help them understand the modern IT landscape so they are prepared to find their place within it—even amidst today’s challenging circumstances.
