Summary

This is a beginner-friendly Python practice project that guides learners through building the classic rock-paper-scissors game step by step. The project demonstrates how to develop an interactive game using simple programming concepts.

Background

Rock-paper-scissors is a worldwide popular game with a history spanning centuries, likely originating in China. Due to its simplicity and quick learnability, it is enjoyed by all age groups.

Game Rules

Rock beats scissors (rock crushes scissors)
Scissors beats paper (scissors cut paper)
Paper beats rock (paper wraps rock)
Identical choices result in a tie

Project Goal

The task is to write a Python program that:

Prompts the user for their choice (0 = rock, 1 = paper, 2 = scissors)
Randomly generates the computer's choice
Compares the two choices
Announces the result (you win / you lose / tie)

Solution Steps

Step 1 – Getting user input:
Use the input() function to request the user's choice, converting it to an integer with int().

Step 2 – Generating computer's choice:
Use the random module's randint(0, 2) function to generate the computer's choice.

Step 3 – Determining the outcome:
Use if-elif-else conditional blocks to compare the two choices according to the game rules. Invalid input is handled separately.

Step 4 – Displaying ASCII art:
The project presents two approaches:

Solution #1: Assign images using if-elif-else conditions
Solution #2 (cleaner): Store images in a list and access them by index

Alternative Short Solution

The project also presents a shorter solution based on a mathematical trick, where the difference b-a (being 1 or -2) determines a loss.

Learning Outcomes

This project is excellent practice for mastering the following Python fundamentals:

input() and type conversion
Using the random module
if-elif-else conditional structures
Logical operators (and, or)
Lists and indexing
f-string formatting
