At the “Code for the Future” event, 9th-grade students from Überwald-Gymnasium in Germany will meet with 8th-grade students from IC Foscolo in Turin, Italy—and together they will develop digital adventures centered on the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Participants learn the basics of programming using the Delightex platform while simultaneously exploring global issues of the future such as climate protection, education, and equal opportunity. The introduction takes a playful approach: First, everyone introduces themselves via personal profiles on a digital bulletin board. Afterward, mixed German-Italian teams work collaboratively on their projects—they plan, design, and program their adventures together online. Communication takes place in English.

The event promotes basic digital skills, intercultural collaboration, and awareness of sustainable development. The young people discover that programming is creative and meaningful—and that European cooperation can be tangible and experiential.

The project is aimed at 8th and 9th grade students (ages 13–16, approximately) who do not need any prior programming experience.

The combination of international exchange, creative coding, and a socially relevant topic makes this event unique. The students don’t just learn about sustainability—they actively create digital content on the topic and experience genuine transnational teamwork in the process.
