CODE CLUB LUNCH CLUB

Introduction to coding for young people, to build digital coding skills and confidence. We will focus on using make code and BBC Micro:bits in this session, but will collaborate with the young people to creatively shape the theme of the session ensure the topic is relevant and interesting. We hope to be able to buy the young people a micro:bit each to send home so they can continue to work on their coding skills. The goal is to build the young people's understanding and confidence, with the aim to enable them to code in their own time. This target group are part of an ongoing partnership, the community group work with families from minority communities specifically, providing holiday activities for children and young people. We are working with Oxford Community Action community group who are partnering with us to provide holiday activities. This event will build on previous interactions and become part of a longer programme to build confidence and gain digital skills and experience. In previous sessions we identified a gap in the young people's coding experience and a desire to learn from both the young people and their families. We aim to collaborate on the theme with the young people and community leaders, potential themes could include: climate change education, Computer Aided Design, 3D printing of micro:bit accessories this will be decided before the session takes place.

King's Arms Project will run two 4-day blocks of coding sessions in the half term for primary school children who have been resettled in the local area. Most of these children are new to the country and live in households with limited incomes and minimal access to IT devices. We will provide an opportunity for children to develop their digital skills while also working on communication and collaboration. We have chosen to partner with Jam Coding, who will provide expert knowledge and teaching approaches as well as supply the equipment that we do not otherwise have access to. They will run their Minecraft Hackers workshop, which means that even the children with limited English language will be able to join in and develop their understanding of coding through command blocks and broader awareness of computational thinking. This will be a very special event for the resettled children because for many of them they can engage with ideas and materials otherwise outside of the reach of their families. Their emerging English skills won't pose a barrier for them in this instance and they can enjoy exposure to a fun and exciting world not readily available to them.

Minecraft Coding Club What content does the event teach? - Coding, specifically the skills of sequencing, repetition, logic and variables - Computational Thinking (perseverance, debugging, logic, collaboration) Which methods and resources are used to convey this content to the participants? - Pupils will use the school’s existing chromebooks to access the Minecraft Education app. - Pupils will use a mixture of the built-in existing tutorials as well as expert modelling and support from their specialist computing teacher. What are the goals of the event? - Increase engagement in programming - Develop coding skills and therefore attainment - Increase enthusiasm and experiences of vulnerable children Which target group are you addressing with your event? - girls, PPG, SEN, ethnic minorities and pupils who have relocated with refugee status What makes your event special for the target group? - This event through the medium of Minecraft will help to engage groups of pupils who are not typically accessing existing provision offered through computing and coding. - Minecraft Education is a low risk resource with high engagement opportunities Is there any other relevant information for the target group, e.g. about registration? - 21 pupils across the three year groups are on the PPG register - 36 pupils across the three year groups are on the SEND register - 48 pupils across the three year groups have English as an additional language - The club will be free and repeated so that additional pupils can access this event
