Rocking and Rolling: Outdoor learning and play_#eTwinnovation
Mon, Nov 13, 2023 7:00 AM

The Project Rocking and Rolling: Outdoor learning and play is focused on ideas for outdoor education. Outdoor education in kindergarten acts as a dynamic tool, promoting interdisciplinary learning while creating narrative frameworks. It creates a real-world framework where young students can actively engage in various disciplines through hands-on experiences, problem-solving, critical thinking, teamwork, and increased environmental awareness. This project's primary aim is to explore the integration of outdoor education with interdisciplinary learning in kindergarten, emphasizing its numerous benefits such as communication, collaboration, creative and critical thinking, active citizenship, sustainability, developing self-confidence, independence and self-esteem. Outdoor environments offer a captivating backdrop where students witness the convergence of different scientific disciplines, including biology, ecology, geology, sociology, literature, mathematics and environmental education. The challenges posed by outdoor settings, such as addressing complex scientific issues, demand an interdisciplinary scientific approach, resulting in compelling narratives. Hands-on experiences further enrich these stories as kindergarten students collect data, conduct experiments, and make observations in the natural world. Interdisciplinary learning cultivates critical thinking, an essential element in crafting captivating narratives, as students analyze problems from diverse angles and develop creative solutions, injecting depth into their stories. Collaborative projects foster teamwork, communication skills and scientific awareness, enabling students to weave themes from various scientific fields into their narratives. The project attempts to initiate a discussion about the inclusion of outdoor play in kindergarten curricula as a move towards a more outdoor approach to early childhood education. The implementation of this project aims to raise students’ interest in science and environmental issues, foster an appreciation and responsibility for the natural environments. A number of activities will be proposed to ensure that kindergarten children benefit from their early involvement in activities outside the classroom while teachers and children from partner schools will actively participate in the planning and implementation of educational activities in the outdoor environment and have the opportunity to be engaged in a creative and playful process of learning. Children will play and learn together while the use of ict tools and programming/coding activities will enhance their outdoor learning experiences. Outdoor play in kindergartens could be a continuation of indoor education, supporting children to live healthier physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual lives by transforming learning into an exciting adventure.
