In the first session of a coding club series, pupils aged 8 were introduced to the Makeblock Codey Rocky and began exploring how it works.

The session began with a guided introduction to the robot’s main features. Pupils learned about the different buttons on Codey Rocky, including the power button and programmable buttons (A, B and C), understanding that these buttons can be assigned functions through coding in later sessions.

This was followed by a group discussion about the robot’s built-in sensors, including the light sensor, sound sensor, and object sensor. Pupils explored what each sensor detects and discussed how the robot could use these inputs to respond to its environment, as well as brainstorming possible project ideas.

Next, pupils were introduced to the Makeblock App, exploring two key modes:

Drive mode, where pupils controlled the robot like a remote-controlled car
Draw & Run mode, where pupils created paths and added actions such as lights and sounds along the route

Finally, pupils explored mBlock, a block-based programming environment similar to Scratch. They were encouraged to investigate the interface, experiment with different blocks, and discuss what kinds of programs they could create.

Throughout the session, pupils worked collaboratively to connect the robot to the apps via Bluetooth, developing problem-solving skills as they figured out the pairing process independently.

This introductory session focused on exploration, discussion, and curiosity, laying the foundation for future coding activities.
