Steps in Code – Programming a Pedometer with Micro:bit and Scratch
This interactive activity combines creative programming with physical movement and environmental responsibility. Students will learn to use the Micro:bit board to build a digital pedometer, using the built-in accelerometer sensor to count steps.
Later, they will connect the Micro:bit to Scratch, where they will create an interactive interface that displays the number of steps taken through animations, encouraging messages or characters that react to movement. The project can be extended by creating a digital story or challenge in which each step contributes to achieving an environmental goal (e.g. saving a polluted city, discovering a green route, etc.).
The activity emphasizes computational thinking, creativity, teamwork and real-life applicability: students reflect on how daily movement and the choice of walking can contribute to personal health and environmental protection.
