Duration: 45-60 minutes
Objective: To explore forest ecosystems, learn about different elements of forests, and reinforce programming concepts using Bee-Bots.
Materials Needed:
- Bee-Bot/blue bot robot
Bee-Bot transparent mat
1. Introduction (5 minutes):
We gather students in a circle and introduce the lesson and explain that today, they will be using Bee-Bot/bluebot robots to find related to the forest. Then a briefly introduce Bee-Bot/blue bot and explain that they will be programming it to move around.
2. Demonstrating Bee-Bot/blue bot (10 minutes):
We present students how to use Bee-Bot/bluebot and demonstrate how to input commands (forward, backward, left, right) into Bee-Bot/blue bot to make it move.
3. Setting Up the Grid (5 minutes):
We lay out the transparent grid mat with pictures of different elements of the forest, then explain that each picture represents elements of the forests and also there are pictures that do not related to the forest, and their task is to navigate Bee-Bot/blue bot to right picture.
4. Programming Bee-Bot/blue bot (15 minutes):
We explain to the students that every student needs to program Bee-Bot/blue bot to navigate to a picture with forest's elements on the grid. It is very important for the teachers to encourage students to work together and plan their route before programming Bee-Bot/blue bot by using a marker but also to observe and analyze what happens. Did Bee-Bot/blue bot reach the right picture? If not, why? Are there any trees in the forest? Can you find a seal in a forest'? etc
We didn't forget debugging - we allow students to make adjustments to their code and try again.
