Tittle: "Women inventors talk to us in scratch"
Short description: The students work in pairs and each pair will create a project in scratch dedicated to a woman inventor.
In each project, there will be two objects, the "presenter" and the "woman-inventor" that they will have a short conversation using sounds
The data about the woman inventor, the images for the inventor (with removed backgrounds using the AI tool https://www.remove.bg/ and the images for the backdrops, the voices-sounds for the conversation (using text to speech AI tool https://www.vanillavoice.com/ will be collected/created by the students)
Example of such a project https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/814591216/
Goals
The aim of the activity is for the students to:
- enhance their computational thinking with their practice in scratch using sounds and images uploaded/created
-be creative in using AI tools (image processing and text to speech)
-be informed of women's achievements in STEM and increase their motivation
-enhance their skills in communication and collaboration
2. Materials
-worksheet for guided web search
-worksheets for the use of the AI tools ( https://www.vanillavoice.com/ and https://www.remove.bg/ )
-scratch accounts for the students
- a padlet for the students to upload their scratch projects and collaborate
-a rubric for the students self evaluation
-a computer per student
3. Steps
-The teacher introduce the topic and the steps of the activity and shows how the students will use the AI tools. (The students are experienced in scratch.). The teacher offers links to the needed worksheets through the padlet that the whole class will use
-The students create pairs as teams. They share the work for gathering the materials that will be used in the scratch projects
-The students create the projects and add them on the padlet
-The students present the projects
-Each student using a rubric (as a shared google doc) assess the presented projects and his/her own
-Discussion in the plenary about the activity
The students use a shared google doc
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MSIxz8C1kso7qBdZp_M6O4-tgx_SvFp6/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=116226888838216494667&rtpof=true&sd=true
for a guided web search for women inventors
They create a text for the woman inventor they choose, they create the dialogues among the presenter of the inventor and the inventor as mp3 files with an AI tool (https://www.vanillavoice.com/) and they gather copyright free images (from pixabay or wikicommons )
Then all these materials (sounds, images) are used to create a short presentation of the inventor in scratch and they post their project to a padlet in the form of a timeline
(For younger students, if the teacher needs an alternative, the students can create posters using the AI tool https://www.canva.com/your-apps/text-to-image to create the images)
In the padlet, all students are invited to add comments under each node explaining to which one of the 17 Global Goals the specific invention contributes
