Tuath Housing Halloween Coding for Kids event

Wed, Oct 28, 2020 5:00 PM

Tuath Housing Association was established and registered in 2000, awarded Voluntary Housing Status by the Department of the Environment and is a member of the Irish Council for Social Housing. We provide housing to over 15,000 tenants and currently manage 5,600 homes. We work in partnership with our tenants, using new technologies to increase accessibility to online information and to provide feedback, engagement and support to develop stronger communities. Some great partnerships formed in 2019 have been in youth engagement and running Coderdojo classes with tenants in Co.Louth. We provided our tenants’ children with a wonderful opportunity to learn a valuable new skill in computer programming through Coderdojo’s coding classes. We would like to run a national online Halloween coding event for children aged 8- 16 and feel that the event on the 28th October will be really beneficial to our residents children to learn about coding for the first time or build their confidence in coding.

HTML/CSS Workshop

Tue, Sep 1, 2020 10:00 AM

This event will show kids how to make their own website. This will be done using HTML/CSS. It will be done over three days. The first day will be an introduction to HTML/CSS talking through the different tags they will be using and we will practice some basic coding to get started. The second day we will go through some more advanced tags and think of some ideas of what they want to put on their website. We will practice some more from day one and start on making the website. The third day we will put the simple website together using all the information covered on the first two days. The website will be about the kid's favourite celebrity which will include headings, bullet points, paragraphs, pictures and a video all about their favourite celebrity. By the end of the 3 days, the kids will have a good understanding of the basics of HTML/CSS and how to make a simple website.

Break it and build it!

Mon, Oct 26, 2020 1:00 PM

Teen-Turn participants are welcome to join us over the October holiday week to break and build laptops! One of the main challenges of crossing the digital divide is equipment ownership. Not every teen has access to a laptop, yet the increase in remote learning has made it a necessity. Teen-Turn participants in this activity will receive 'junk' laptops donated to our organization from mentors and company partners. The challenge will be to diagnose and repair to working order the item -- which then will be yours to use! The virtual week will run at lunchtime to enable as many company mentors as possible to facilitate. The schedule will be as follows: Mon 1 hr Webinar with Q&A (diagnosing the problem) Tues 2 hr Breakout Sessions with Mentors Wed 1hr Webinar with Q&A (smart repairs and tricks of the trade) Thu 2 hr Breakout Sessions with Mentors Fri 1 hr Showcase of Participant Progress Learning will include the replacement of hard drives and fans, installing operating systems, BIOS functions and other basics. An accompanying webpage with recordings of the webinars and links to supporting materials will be made available on our website.
