Small digital actions that make a big difference

Festive Acts of Digital Kindness

The holiday season is all about connection, kindness, and giving. But gifts don’t have to come wrapped in paper with a bow on top.
This December, we’re inviting you to join us for something special: Festive Acts of Digital Kindness.

What are festive acts of digital kindness?

Simple: they’re small ways to use your creativity, problem-solving skills, and digital know-how to brighten someone else’s day.
No elaborate projects required. No competitions. No prizes. Just the warm feeling of knowing you’ve helped someone or made them smile.

Between 15–23 December, we’ll be sharing six acts of digital kindness. You can try one, try them all, or simply take inspiration and do your own thing.
There’s no right or wrong way to participate.

Why digital kindness?

We often think of coding and technology as solitary activities. just you and your screen. But actually, digital skills are incredibly powerful tools for connection and community.
When you:

  • teach someone something new
  • create something to make someone smile
  • help someone feel safer or more confident online
  • share encouragement with a learner

…you’re using your skills to make the world a little bit better. And that’s what the festive season is all about.

The six acts

Here are the acts of digital kindness we’ll be sharing this December. Pick whichever ones speak to you:

  1. Create a festive digital card

Use Scratch, Python, or any digital tool to design a holiday card for family or friends. Add animations, music, or interactive elements.
The recipient will treasure the thought and creativity you put into it.

  2. Show someone how to do something online

Is there something you know how to do that would help someone else? Show a parent how to video call grandparents. Help a neighbour set up a playlist.
Teach a sibling how to use a helpful app. Your knowledge can unlock new possibilities for others.

  3. Teach a younger child a simple coding concept

Loops, sequences, conditions are building blocks of coding that can be explained in minutes and open up a world of understanding.
Spend a little time with a younger learner and watch their eyes light up when things click.

  4. Help a friend be safer online

Privacy settings. Strong passwords. Spotting suspicious messages. These skills matter, and you can help someone feel more secure online.
Check settings together, share tips, and create a safer digital space for those around you.

  5. Share an encouraging message

We all remember the encouragement that kept us going when learning felt hard. Find someone taking their first steps in coding, in your classroom, online community, or family, and let them know they can do it. Your words might be exactly what they need to hear.

  6. Organise a tiny coding moment

Before school breaks for the holidays, gather a few people for a quick coding activity. It doesn’t need to be elaborate. Even 15 minutes of creative coding fun can be the perfect way to end the term and inspire others.

How to get started

Who is this for?

Everyone! Whether you’re:

  • a teacher looking for a meaningful pre-holiday activity
  • a parent wanting to do something creative with your children
  • a young person eager to share your digital skills
  • a coding club organiser seeking inspiration
  • someone who simply wants to spread a little joy

…there’s an act of digital kindness with your name on it.

The bigger picture

Acts of kindness don’t need to be grand gestures. Often, the smallest actions create the biggest ripples. When you take a few minutes to help, teach, create, or encourage, you’re not just making one person’s day better,  you’re modelling what a kinder, more connected digital world looks like.

You’re showing that coding and digital skills aren’t just about technology; they’re about people. About community. About using what we know to help others.

Everyone can create with code, and everyone can use those skills to make a difference.
