🛠️ Creative Summer Workshops in the Garage for Children 13+
In Ajdovščina, Slovenia, Zavod Beta – Institute for the Development of Society organised a series of workshops in their creative space, Garage, for young people aged 13 and above.
Held throughout August as part of the European Code Week initiative, the workshops were supported through a project that received a small grant in the first round of Profil Klett’s call for proposals as the regional hub.
Led by mentor Maks Rodman, the workshops offered a hands-on, immersive experience:
“I decided to run workshops for older children because as a kid I always dreamed of holidays like this, but unfortunately no one offered them back then. I think it’s very important at this stage of life for kids to learn different processing techniques they otherwise wouldn’t, or to build on the knowledge they gained in primary school. I’m satisfied with the turnout—maybe there were even a bit too many kids! Overall, I was very happy with their projects; they really put effort into making them.”
Participants learned practical skills while also exploring the importance of sustainability and gender equality in technology.
🔊 Bluetooth Speakers, Simulators, and Flying Machines
The programme was delivered across three workshop weeks:
- 4–8 August
- 11–14 August
- 18–22 August 2025
Each week began with building a Bluetooth speaker—covering the theory of electronic components, soldering, and case design using wood, cardboard, or PLA filament and 3D printing. Participants also learned laser engraving and computer modelling before testing their speakers with real music.
A major highlight was the team simulator challenge—building a full driving simulator from scrap materials, including a base, pedals, and monitor stand. This emphasised teamwork and sustainable reuse.
They also explored aerodynamics by building and testing simple airplanes, while other projects included:
- Repairing a go-kart, electric scooter, and car
- Upgrading RC cars
- Designing and printing car components, cup holders, and more
On the final day, they assembled a storage house for electric toy cars, enhanced the simulator, and repaired car headlights.
🏀 Activities, Relaxation, and Socialising
Beyond the tech, the workshops offered fun and downtime:
- Nature walks to the source of the Hubelj River
- Basketball and water games
- Chill time with chess, billiards, and board games
This balance of learning and leisure helped the group bond, recharge, and express themselves creatively.
🌟 Young People as True Creators
The enthusiasm and creativity on display were remarkable:
- Rene 3D-printed a detailed Ferrari model in his spare time
- Domen shared his excitement about the teamwork and hands-on building
Participants left not just with completed projects, but with skills, confidence, and inspiration to continue exploring the tech world.
These Creative Summer Workshops were far more than holiday childcare—they provided meaningful learning experiences and sparked curiosity in digital, mechanical, and sustainable innovation.
