Learning Together: Coding and AI for Girls and Their Mothers

06/04/26

Following our announcement of the EU Code Week Small Grants Nordic winners, we are continuing our series highlighting the inspiring grassroots projects bringing coding and digital skills to life across the region.

One of the standout initiatives comes from High5Girls in Denmark, who are creating a unique learning experience that brings girls and their mothers into the world of coding and artificial intelligence together.

AI for Girls

Coding and Artificial Intelligence for You and Your Mother

On 29 April 2026, High5Girls will host a special evening at the Technical University of Denmark, inviting girls aged 13–16 and their mothers to explore coding and artificial intelligence side by side.

This is more than just a workshop. It is a space for shared learning, open dialogue and connection, recognising the important role that families play in shaping young people’s educational journeys.

Learning by doing — together

The evening will combine hands-on activities with meaningful conversations. Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with coding and artificial intelligence, including programming a robot alongside High5Girls role models Oda and Helena.

Through these interactive sessions, coding is presented not as something complex or inaccessible, but as something creative, social and achievable. The goal is to build confidence and curiosity, encouraging both girls and their mothers to explore technology together.

Why involve mothers?

Research shows that in around 75% of cases, mothers are the primary influence when it comes to conversations about education. They are key supporters, role models and decision-making partners for their daughters.

By actively involving mothers in this experience, High5Girls aims to strengthen their understanding of digital skills and empower them to better support their daughters — especially in areas like STEM, where many parents may not have prior experience.

Challenging stereotypes and opening new perspectives

The event also creates space to reflect on the less visible barriers that can shape educational and career choices. Through guided discussions and activities, participants will explore topics such as job stereotypes, bias and expectations, and how these can influence decisions.

By addressing these topics together, the initiative helps both girls and their mothers gain new perspectives and feel more confident in exploring future opportunities in technology.

A welcoming and supportive environment

Taking place from 5:00 PM to 8:15 PM, the evening will include light food and drinks, creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. While parts of the programme will be delivered in English, participants will also have the opportunity to engage in Danish.

Participation is free, thanks to support from the EU Code Week Small Grants initiative and the Nordic Hub Coordinator, the European Centre for Women and Technology.

Building confidence for the future

This initiative highlights how coding and artificial intelligence can be introduced in ways that are inclusive, engaging and rooted in real-life relationships.

By learning together, asking questions and exploring new ideas, girls and their mothers are not only building digital skills — they are also building confidence for the future.

Because when we learn together, we are stronger — especially when it comes to shaping the opportunities ahead.
