Exploring AI for Real-World Impact

The AI in STEM Challenge, organized by Science on Stage Germany and supported by Amazon Future Engineer, invited students and teachers across Europe to explore how artificial intelligence can be used to solve real-world problems.

From primary to secondary schools, teams developed AI-based projects that combined technical learning with creativity, collaboration, and social relevance. After months of development, ten finalist teams from eight countries were invited to present their work at the final event in Berlin.

Tackling Local and Global Challenges

The projects addressed a wide range of challenges that students identified in their school, town, region, or even globally. Highlights included:

Italy: À la recherche du temps perdu — supporting people with Alzheimer’s through object recognition

Türkiye: See4me, a navigation tool for the visually impaired, and Smart Hazelnut Sorters, improving agricultural efficiency.

Germany: Intelligent Nose, analyzing honey samples with AI to replace costly lab testing.

Spain: Saving Patella Ferruginea, using AI to protect an endangered marine limpet species.

United Kingdom: Predictive AI saves our planet, employing AI-assisted monitoring to combat illegal fishing.

Portugal: Smart (AI) firefighting system, comparing sensor-based and AI-driven solutions to detect and control wildfires.

Poland: Eco Guard, using drones and apps to monitor air quality and alert communities to pollution threats.

Greece: FeelosophAI, interpreting emotions of children with autism through their drawings and body language, and Emotionale Botanik, using sensors and AI to support plant health.

A Celebration of Innovation in Berlin

The final event in Berlin was more than a showcase—it was a celebration of innovation, collaboration, and education. Among the guests was Berlin’s mayor, Franziska Giffey, who welcomed the finalists with an encouraging message.

She emphasized Berlin’s role as a city of innovation and education, home to leading universities and research institutions, and expressed admiration for the students’ creativity and commitment—leaving no doubt that the city values young talent.

And the Winners Are…

The jury praised all projects for their originality, technical execution, and student engagement. Choosing three winners was no easy task, but in the end, the jury agreed on:

  • 🥉 3rd place: Eco Guard – together for clean air (Kobylanka, Poland)

  • 🥈 2nd place: Predictive AI saves our planet (Dorchester, United Kingdom)

  • 🥇 1st place: Intelligent Nose – AI for honeytype detecting (Soest, Germany)

Shaping the Future with AI

The AI in STEM Challenge 2025 proved that with the right support, young people are not only ready to understand AI, but also to shape its future. Their projects show how technology, creativity, and community spirit can come together to solve some of today’s most pressing challenges.
