Code Week 2025 in Finland: Inspiring the Next Generation of Digital Creators
09/09/25
This year’s Code Week in Finland will be more exciting than ever. While the official EU Code Week takes place in mid-October, Finnish schools will celebrate Code Week 2025 on September 29–October 22, to accommodate the national autumn holiday schedule. Organised by the Innokas Network in collaboration with the Finnish National Agency for Education and Åbo Akademi’s Skolresurs, this nationwide initiative encourages schools, teachers, and educational institutions to dive into the world of programming and computational thinking. All activities are free, remote-friendly, and available in Finnish, Swedish, and English, ensuring accessibility for all learners from early childhood to upper secondary level.
An Updated National Curriculum for Programming
One of the major highlights this year is the release of Finland’s updated national curriculum for basic education, which places a stronger emphasis on programming skills. To support educators in implementing these changes, the Innokas Network has published a “Programming in Basic Education” poster that outlines the learning path for coding across all grade levels. This structured approach is based on over ten years of development work and provides a clear, practical guide to integrating coding into everyday classroom teaching. Educators can also explore a broad range of Finnish-developed learning materials that cover programming, robotics, and Innovation Education at the Innokas website.
Finland’s AI Guidelines Set a Global Standard
In addition to curriculum updates, Finland is once again leading the way globally with its 2025 AI Guidelines for Education. These guidelines strike a thoughtful balance between embracing cutting-edge technology and maintaining strong societal values. The guidelines are designed to ensure that AI supports learning in ethical, inclusive, and educationally sound ways. This forward-thinking model offers valuable insights for educators and policymakers around the world who are navigating the complexities of AI in education. English-Language Events for Code Week 2025
International participants and English-speaking educators have two exciting opportunities to join Code Week 2025 remotely. The first is a student-focused lesson titled “Explore Scratch Junior,” taking place on Tuesday, October 21, from 10:00 to 11:00 CET. Designed for 5–6-year-olds and students in grades 1–2, this beginner-friendly session requires no prior experience with Scratch Junior from teachers or students. The session will be led by Innokas trainer Anu Kahri. Registration for the session closes on October 13, you can register here.
The second event is a virtual coffee session for teachers and educators titled “The Learning Path for Coding Step by Step,” held on Wednesday, October 22, from 17:00 to 17:45 CET. Hosted by Innokas trainers Anu Kahri and Hanne Ritala, this session explores the Programming in Education learning material that supports teaching computational thinking and programming in a systematic, curriculum-based way. The material is suitable for use in early childhood and basic education, as well as at the upper secondary level. Registration is available here and it also closes on October 13.
Explore More Localised Programs
In addition to the English-language events, educators and students can explore a wide range of Finnish-language coding programmes available for autumn 2025, as well as Swedish-language options tailored to local communities. These programmes continue to make digital skills education accessible and engaging for learners across Finland.
Looking Ahead
Finland continues to lead the way in educational innovation, from reimagining how programming is taught to setting global standards for AI integration. Code Week 2025 is a celebration of creativity, technology, and learning, and offers something for everyone—whether you’re a student, teacher, or policymaker.
