Code Week provides certification solution after GDPR data update

Publication date: March 24, 2025

EU Code Week celebrates the dedication and impact of our vibrant community of educators, and we are committed to ensuring they receive the recognition they deserve for promoting and teaching digital skills.

As part of a recent platform update, some educator accounts were anonymised due to GDPR regulations during a necessary data transfer process in 2024, meaning some certificates could not be delivered. To resolve this issue, Code Week is providing a one-time solution to allow affected educators to access their certificates.

Background on the data transfer process

As part of the transition of the EU Code Week platform to a new consortium, Code4Europe, a GDPR-compliant data transfer process was implemented in 2024. This required all users to confirm their consent for their data to be transferred from DG CNECT (part of the European Commission) to the new platform administrators,

Between July 1 and December 15, 2024, all registered users were notified of this requirement via a full-screen notice upon logging on to the platform. Those who provided consent retained full access to their accounts and data. However, as per GDPR regulations, users who did not log in during this period or who declined the data transfer had their personal data permanently anonymised on December 16, 2024. This meant that their names, email addresses, and other personal details were deleted and could not legally be recovered.

As a result, some educators who qualified for Excellence and Super Organiser certificates in 2024 could not be contacted, as their details were no longer accessible.

A one-time universal access solution for those affected

To ensure that all eligible educators can still receive recognition for their achievements, EU Code Week is providing a downloadable blank certificate template. Affected educators can:

  • Download the blank certificate template and manually enter their details:

This is a one-time solution to accommodate those impacted by GDPR compliance procedures. The EU Code Week team trusts in the integrity of its community to ensure that all deserving educators can be recognised.

Ensuring access for all future activities — register for 2025

To avoid similar issues in future, educators and organisers are encouraged to re-register for 2025 and provide GDPR consent to maintain uninterrupted access to their accounts and certificates.
