Sheffield Girls’ will host a full day celebrating robotics for approximately 45 students aged 9-11 in Year 5 & Year 6 from primary schools across Sheffield. The participating students will learn about robotics, researching AI, preparing team presentations and have the chance to demonstrate their robotics learning as well as participating in a friendly competition with their creations. The day will provide hands-on and minds-on sessions for participating students making Computing, Mathematics, Design Technology and Science fun and interesting so that they develop the competencies and values that are needed in the world of work without the constraints of gender or poverty bias. The participating schools are representative of the social and economic diversity of the city, providing a unique opportunity for pupils from a diverse range of backgrounds to come together for a shared experience. Several of the schools involved are situated within socially and economically deprived areas of Sheffield. All of the schools to be invited benefit from access to our Sheffield Primary Robotics Hub, which gives them free staff training opportunities, curriculum resources and robot loan scheme. The Hub helps support schools across Sheffield to enhance the teaching and learning experience they can provide for their students removing a key barrier of cost that schools encounter when teaching robotics. This event offers local children a unique opportunity to participate in a full day robotics competition. The day will be themed around the Olympics and participants will use LEGO Spike Prime to learn block coding as well as physical robotic programming, both of which are core items within the UK’s Primary National Computing Curriculum. Participants will also learn personal and social skills as they work together with team mates to problem-solve to ensure that the robots interact with tasks. Members from the local STEM community will be attending the event to judge the competition and provide feedback to participants on their presentation. The families of participating children will be invited to join the final showcase of the day. This event aims to raise the aspirations and sense of achievement for the students involved regardless of their socio-economic background. As a cross-sector event the shared experiences had by students will help to break down social, education and economic barriers bringing children together through the shared experience of robotics.

The event will teach the children how to use a variety of different block coding to create programs. Children will learn the basic on code.org to control elements of a game, then progress to using scratch to create games, each time increasing the difficulty so children know how to create loops and variables. The children will them progress to using block coding to code programs on the BBCmicrobits. Once the children are familiar with BBCmicrobits, they will use them to create programs that solve a problems. Like data loggers. We have to add-ons for the BBCmicrobits, the children will use these and create code to make lights on a robot work and control a buggy. The goals at the events are to create code for a given outcome, this could be to make music or create a game. The sessions will be adapted so all learners will have the opportunity to succeed no matter what their ability. Hopefully this will foster a love and passion for computing and coding. The sessions will be aimed at pupil premium children, childr4en with SEND, Looked after children and children from disadvantaged backgrounds. I will make this event specifically for the target groups by sending children a special invite. I have listed the event as a beginner event but that should develop as the weeks progress and the children become more confident and knowledgeable.

The hackathon will teach: - Basics of Electronics and Coding: Using BBC micro:bits and simple electronic components. - Product Design and Prototyping: Brainstorming, designing, and building a point of sale device. - Entrepreneurship: Marketing and showcasing a product. - Teamwork and Presentation Skills: Collaborating effectively and pitching ideas to a panel of judges. 2. The event is special for the target group: - Participate during Manchester Science Festival (Oct) - Access to Technology and Mentorship: Providing tools and expert guidance. - Engaging and Interactive Learning: A fun, hands-on approach to learning STEM. - Real-World Relevance: Challenges that mimic real-world problems and solutions, making learning practical and impactful. - Community Involvement: Involvement of local companies and alumni to support and mentor students. 6. The event targets young people aged 8-24 predominantly from South Asian backgrounds who reside in areas of high deprivation. This demographic is often underserved and underrepresented in STEM fields, and the event aims to bridge this gap by providing tailored educational opportunities. CodeSpark: Ignite Your Tech Future is uniquely tailored for young people from South Asian backgrounds living in high deprivation areas, making it special by addressing the specific needs and challenges faced by this demographic. The combination of interactive and fun workshops with inspiring education ensures that the participants not only learn valuable skills but also feel motivated and encouraged to explore further opportunities in STEM fields. Additionally, the event builds on the success of a previous Girls STEM Play event, which demonstrated significant interest and positive outcomes for young girls from Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, paving the way for further similar initiatives. For this event, we will work with Inclusive Bytes who will provide us with mentor developers as well as use of their tech-gears.
