Nowadays, the devastating effects of global warming and climate change are evident in people's daily lives, who are forced to adapt to the new reality and take action to protect the planet. The school plays an important role in cultivating skills and developing active future citizens. Through playful activities, students can change the future of the planet by adopting more responsible behaviors. Storytelling can become a great challenge to attract their interest and understand that coding is all around their actions. In this coding activity “Storychangers take action… to save the world!”, students are asked to tell their own stories based on real situations connected to their everyday life and then represent them in different ways (creating maquettes, role playing, coded slogans, dance/ yoga movements etc.) through unplugged activities or with the support of robotics. Their mission is to spread their own messages by proposing a solution at the end of their story to improve conditions.

This activity belongs to the coding alliance "We C.O.D.E. (Create Opportunities & Develop Education) that is active since 2020.

Goals:

*to tell a story;

*to enrich their vocabulary by using specific storytelling phrases;

*to use creatively materials to design maquettes/ costumes or their bodies to represent their story;

*to code messages;

*to program robots;

*to propose solutions;

*to discuss and agree on the most effective solution;

*to collaborate in small teams;

*to present their results.

The steps to implement this coding activity are: 1. Discussion between students to decide the concept of their story related to environmental or social issues of their everyday life, the characters and the plot. 2. Proposals to solve the issue & agreement on the most effective one 3. Creating the story (could be used a web tool) 4. Decide the story’s representation format (creating maquettes, role playing, coded slogans, dance/ yoga movements, etc.) 5. Forming small groups and distributing responsibilities to represent a part of the story. 6. Each team based on the representation format can: collect and use creatively materials to create maquettes/ map/ elements of the story, make rehearsals for dance moves, code letters to create secret slogans etc. to present their part; 7. Teams bring together the parts- final form of the story. 8. Representation of the story as an event This is an interdisciplinary activity that helps students to develop computational thinking programming skills in a fun and engaging way!
