This is a year-long cross-curricular project for our Junior School, launched during this year's CodeQuest Day, that bridges ICT and Art. The final output is a large-scale, collaborative wooden pixel art mosaic of the school's logo, designed to be exhibited at the Junior School.

Project Details

Theme: Pixels, Pixel Art, and Collaborative Creation
Target Group: Junior School Students (Ages 6-10).
Duration: Year-long project, launched in October and completed by the end of this scholastic year
ICT/Coding Connection: The entire project hinges on the digital concept of the pixel, which is the fundamental unit of digital imaging. Students learn about how an image is made up of many pixels that together form a picture. The school logo is mapped out digitally on a 52 x 42 pixel grid, based on three basic colors: Maroon, Grey, and White.
Art/Hands-on Activity: Students are individually responsible for preparing and painting a set of 2cm x 2cm wood tiles in one of the three colors. This physical act of painting each small tile reinforces the pixel concept. The tiles are then to be professionally assembled on an 84cm x 104cm plywood board to form the complete logo.
Commemoration: The completed 2184-tile mosaic will serve as a lasting installation - a tangible commemoration of the students' learning journey through the world of digital art and coding fundamentals.

Learning Outcomes

Digital Literacy: Understand how digital images are constructed using pixels.
Computational Thinking: Apply principles of decomposition (breaking the large logo into individual tiles/tasks) and pattern recognition (following the color map).
Visual Arts: Practice precision painting and appreciation for large-scale composition.
Collaboration: Contribute to a massive final product where every single tile is essential to the successful whole.
