Crumble Pie!
Mon, Sep 16, 2024 10:00 AM
We would like to put the money towards a Crumble Kit to have a Crumble Pie Day! (Which would then continue for the rest of the term...) We want children to passionate about Coding! We loaned a kit this term from the local teachcomutinghub but we were only allowed it for 4 weeks and the development in their programming and scratch skills was outstanding! We would use the Crumble Kit with the current Year 6 and buddy them with the Year 5 so they can teach them how to use the kit. Target objectives: 1. design, write and debug programs that accomplish specific goals, including controlling or simulating physical systems; solve problems by decomposing them into smaller parts 2. use sequence, selection, and repetition in programs; work with variables and various forms of input and output 3. use logical reasoning to explain how some simple algorithms work and to detect and correct errors in algorithms and programs This equipment has never been used by the current Year 4 and they will experience it for the first time. The Year 5 would get the chance to develop their skills and create moving toys to share with their younger buddies in KS1. We would like to inspire future coders and programmers, especially the girls as they see it as a 'boys activity!'
Woodland Coding, Second Year
Tue, Oct 15, 2024 9:00 AM
ASK is the Autism Support Kilkeel group - for whom I delivered this Meet and Code event last year. They have asked me to repeat the event for them this year as there remain many children eager to participate. This outdoor learning event will provide project-based learning experiences for a group of 8-10 autistic children from the local community. They will use Micro:Bits to communicate and express themselves whilst exploring the natural environment aided by technology, leading to the development of their coding skills, social interaction, and beneficial sensory encounters. Content will include: Introduction to the Micro:Bit, features, functions and core concepts of input / output / data processing and examples of application Review of programming fundamentals with learners. Ascertaining of existing level of coding skills in the expectation that the existing level of knowledge of this technology and the extent of existing skills will be minimal. Resources will include a Micro:Bit each, access to sufficient PCs for coding which will be located under cover in a forest clearing (which has mains power and high speed WiFi already in place); a projector; seating and tables. Stages: Introduction to Physical Computing: specific examples given of where it is helpful Summary of the Micro:Bit, its features and functionality Each child will have been matched up with one or more carers. Demonstration of the MakeCode software and downloading process. This will be unhurried and paced appropriately, as will all subsequent coding. Micro: Bits will then be coded to create a compass . Using the compass each child, along with their carers, will be tasked with mapping simple features (for example the paths, streams) of the wood running to the North and to the East of The Clearing. Having orientated themselves and created their first program, children and their carers will begin the creation of a second program to create a metal detector for finding lost keys. Key hunting game. Demonstration of radio transmission of messages between Micro: Bits Each child will have the opportunity to code their own messaging system on a Micro:Bit It will allow them to send their choice of picture / words between them and another person. Development of the Micro:Bit as a communication device for the autistic children to express feeling. Please see: www.flickernet.net/ask
