The school has transformed its approach to education, integrating coding and digital literacy in ways that inspire students and teachers alike.

A Teacher’s Vision for Inclusive Education

prof. Nicoletta Hustiuc, Scoala Gimnaziala Nr. 3 Cugir

Teacher, mentor, eTwinning and Erasmus+ ambassador Nicoletta Hustiuc is committed to shaping the future of education not just in her school, but across all Europe. Her passion for inclusive education is evident in her approach to coding, where she ensures that every child, regardless of age or background, has the opportunity to explore the world of technology.

Nicoletta’s introduction to the EU Code Week came through an online community of educators. The idea of dedicating a week to coding and digital literacy resonated deeply with her belief in inclusivity within digital education. Understanding the need for age-appropriate and engaging methods, she began by introducing unplugged coding activities to her preschool class. These activities, which use everyday materials to teach basic coding concepts, were an instant hit with her young students, igniting a spark that would soon spread throughout the entire school.

A School-Wide Celebration of Coding

What started as a single teacher’s initiative quickly grew into a school-wide celebration. Nicoletta’s enthusiasm was contagious, and soon, her colleagues were eager to incorporate coding into their own classrooms. With the support of the school administration and the engagement of parents, Scoala Gimnaziala Nr. 3 Cugir transformed EU Code Week into an event that united the entire school community.

Classrooms were turned into coding labs, where students of all ages participated in activities designed to match their developmental levels. From constructing sequences in unplugged coding games to creating stories through coding, students were not only learning the basics of programming but also enhancing their problem-solving skills and creativity. The initiative’s success demonstrated that coding is for everyone and that it can be taught in a fun, meaningful way without the need for advanced technology.

Positive Changes and Lasting Impact

Since the school began participating in the EU Code Week, the impact has been profound. Nicoletta has observed a noticeable improvement in students’ problem-solving skills, creativity, and collaboration. The integration of coding into various subjects has made learning more holistic, connecting technology with literacy, mathematics, and even language learning.

The school’s involvement in eTwinning projects, particularly those focused on coding, has also enriched students’ global awareness and communication skills. Collaborating with peers from countries like Spain, Turkey, and Greece has broadened their perspectives and taught them the value of teamwork and respect for diverse ideas. These projects have not only enhanced the students’ educational experiences but have also brought recognition to the school on a national and European level.

Teachers at Scoala Gimnaziala Nr. 3 Cugir have been inspired by the success of the coding initiatives. The recognition received, including National and European Quality Labels for their eTwinning projects, has motivated them to explore new teaching methods and integrate coding into their subjects. This has led to a dynamic, forward-thinking approach to education, where innovation is encouraged, and collaboration is key.

The involvement of parents has strengthened the home-school connection, creating a supportive environment for students to thrive.

The school’s achievements have not gone unnoticed. The recognition from EU Code Week and the educational community has instilled a sense of pride in students, teachers, and parents alike.
