Humans of Code Week – Peter Marshman, Code Week Ambassador United Kingdom
Publication date: September 14, 2022
What advice would you give to someone who wants to learn / teach coding?
I would advise teachers that want to teach coding to explore approaches to engage girls, develop their self-efficacy and self-confidence through contextual learning approaches. Pay equal attention to the pedagogy of teaching coding as to the content of skills and knowledge to ensure children become more independent. Make sure that you create digital leaders in your school that can be internal role models for younger groups to aspire to be future digital champions.
How do you imagine the future of Code Week to look like?
An international event, sharing the importance of peace through coding and collaboration. Where physical activity and coding come together to ensure that young people are digitally active.
What are the top three reasons why everyone / kids should learn how to code?
Children are surrounded by technology as users where decisions are being made for them by software developers. For young people to be discerning users of technology it is really important that they are able to read and write code and so make decisions about the ethical use of computing now and in the future. It’s so important that girls and boys learn to code and to ensure that girls become part of the cycle of developing systems that are made for females as well as males.
