Within the next 10 to 15 years, 90 per cent of all jobs in Europe will require some level of technological skills, and now is the time for the future workforce to start acquiring these skills. Yet, not enough students are being given the opportunity to develop the technical skills necessary to help them prepare for the new global economy.
We want to help the next generation thrive in this digital era. This is part of our commitment to helping 10 million people and businesses in Europe, the Middle East and Africa to find jobs, digitise and grow by the end of 2021. We also recognise the unprecedented challenge to education and training systems created by Covid-19 lockdown measures and the urgent need to ensure all students and teachers have access to vital digital skills and economic opportunities.
That’s why for the seventh year we’re supporting the European Commission’s Europe Code Week 2020 initiative. Over the past years, we have offered grants to a number of organisations, and we were excited to see their results. This year, to celebrate Europe Code Week, we are giving teachers, parents and caregivers the tools they need to help students (aged 9-14) learn basic coding skills in a fun and engaging way. Together with Europe Code Week, we have created easy-to-use, free, online resources available in 21 European languages.
We invite everyone to try these resources and share their feedback with us at europe-code-week@google.com. Remember to participate in the Code Week 4 All challenge and make sure to use the code “Animate A Name”.
