Empowering Young Women and Girls: Celebrating Girls in ICT Day 2023
Publication date: April 28, 2023
Girls in ICT Day 2023 is taking place on 27 April, and this year’s theme is “Digital Skills for Life”. The aim of this international celebration is to encourage young women and girls from 12-24 to pursue a future in information and communication technologies (ICT) and other STEM fields, providing them with the necessary skills, confidence, and support to achieve their goals. The day is organised by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and partners who work together to inspire and encourage girls to pursue careers in ICT and bridge the gender digital divide.
The Girls in ICT Day shares many of the same goals as EU Code Week, such as the promotion of digital skills among young people, with a particular focus on coding and programming. Both initiatives recognise the need to provide young people with the digital skills needed to succeed in a world that is becoming increasingly dependent on technology. By participating in Girls in ICT Day, young women and girls can learn about the wide range of careers that are available to them in STEM fields, including ICT, and gain the skills they need to excel in these fields.
Inspiring and empowering young women and girls
This year’s Girls in ICT Day event will be celebrated during the Transform Africa Summit 2023 in Zimbabwe, with a series of events running throughout the day. The events will address various topics related to digital skills, including role models, education, mentorship, and youth participation. The goal is to inspire and strengthen young women and girls while encouraging them to pursue studies and careers in STEM fields and helping them achieve their dreams.
In addition to the events taking place during Girls in ICT Day, organisers have also provided a toolkit for individuals and organisations who want to organise their own activities. This toolkit provides guidance on how to organise a Girls in ICT event, including ideas for activities and resources that can be used to support these events. Individuals and organisations can also join the Girls in ICT events worldwide and this possibility offers them the opportunity to connect with other like-minded individuals and organisations who are likewise committed to promoting digital skills among young women and girls.
Girls in ICT Day 2023 is a fantastic opportunity for young women and girls to gain the digital skills they need to succeed in today’s world. By participating in this event, they can learn about the wide range of careers available to them in STEM fields, including ICT, and gain the skills, confidence, and support that they need to achieve their goals. Let us recommit to the goal of equal access for young women and girls to opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math, and support initiatives like Girls in ICT Day and EU Code Week to promote digital skills among young people.
