Publication date: October 22, 2019
On 21 October 2019, Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, shared her congratulations to all participants of EU Code Week 2019, which was again a record-breaking year for the initiative with over 66 000 activities organized, approximately 22 000 more than in the 2018 edition.
Commissioner Gabriel highlighted the different activities organized across Europe and beyond, involving not only coding but also unplugged activities, computational thinking exercises,
robotics, and visual programming across different subjects and member states, and shared her enthusiasm for students becoming active contributors to the digital world, expanding their critical thinking skills, and learning how to be safe online.
Commissioner Gabriel shared that “most young people do not want to remain passive consumers of digital technology and services – they want to do more than just like or share.” She shared her vision of together speeding up change in education systems and bringing more innovation and digital competence to classrooms.
By participating and supporting EU Code Week, we can “equip more young people with digital superpowers,” and continue to work together and look ahead towards the next edition, which will take place from 10 to 25 October 2020.
