Unbeknownst to a lot of students and educators, the smartphone can be a very powerful tool for 3D scanning. In this session, we propose an overview of simple and affordable technologies for scanning using mobile devices, from photogrammetry to Lidar, as well as using AI techniques such as NeRFs. We will also show how we can integrate this technology in classroom or educational makerspace settings, with hands-on projects focusing on themes from digital heritage to 3D self expression, where the smartphone is the primary tool that can capture reality, to be reshaped using digital tools or reproduced with 3d printing.
