The Journey of micro:bit

The micro:bit story began with a simple yet ambitious goal: to make coding accessible and enjoyable for children everywhere. Launched by the BBC in 2016 as part of its Make it Digital campaign, the BBC micro:bit is a pocket-sized computer designed to make learning and teaching easy and fun. Its simplicity and versatility have made it a favourite tool in classrooms around the world, with millions of devices helping students from over 60 countries to learn to code.

Introducing micro:bit CreateAI

Building on this success, the Micro:bit Educational Foundation has recently introduced micro:bit CreateAI. This free, web-based tool allows students to delve into the exciting world of artificial intelligence (AI) through intuitive, project-based learning. By integrating movement and machine learning, micro:bit CreateAI makes it easy for students to explore complex concepts in a tangible and engaging way. Whether it’s recognising gestures or creating interactive AI models, students can bring their digital ideas to life using a familiar micro:bit device.

Coding@Christmas Competition

This year, the Micro:bit Educational Foundation has generously sponsored the Coding@Christmas competition, demonstrating their continued commitment to fostering coding skills in young people across Europe. Participants have the exciting opportunity to win micro:bit kits, which can be used to explore a range of creative coding projects, from making a snow globe to designing festive decorations.

Aligned Missions: EU Code Week and Micro:bit Educational Foundation

The mission of the Micro:bit Educational Foundation resonates deeply with the goals of EU Code Week. Both organisations believe in demystifying the process of coding, making it accessible to as many students as possible. By introducing young people to coding, we equip them with the critical thinking, problem-solving, and creative skills necessary to navigate and succeed in the digital world.

EU Code Week and micro:bit share the vision of an inclusive digital future. Through initiatives like Coding@Christmas and the use of tools such as micro:bit CreateAI, we aim to inspire a lifelong passion for technology and innovation. These efforts emphasise the importance of digital literacy and encourage students to become active creators of technology, not just passive users.

The Importance of Coding Education

Learning to code is more than just understanding how to string together lines of code. It’s about teaching young minds how to think differently, how to break down problems, iterate solutions, and collaborate with others. Skills developed through coding are applicable across many aspects of life and are essential in a variety of career paths.

Through partnerships with organisations like the Micro:bit Educational Foundation, EU Code Week continues to promote these vital skills. Together, we are working to ensure that every child has the opportunity to become digitally literate. In doing so, we are opening doors to new possibilities and empowering the next generation to shape the future.

As we look forward to 2025, we are grateful for the continued support of the Micro:bit Educational Foundation. Their dedication to our shared mission not only enriches the experience we offer but also helps ensure that the benefits of coding education reach as many students as possible across Europe.

Join us in celebrating the power of coding and the boundless potential of young minds.
