The initiative for the EU Code Week at Istituto Comprensivo 9 Bologna will represent the first action of the school new project called “Pomeriggi digitali (digital afternoons). The project includes a program of STEM labs for students, based on PBL methodology, starting in november 2018 and developing for the whole school year, organized as follows: Introduction to computational thinking and coding for primary school students (age 6-8) Invent, design and learn with coding and making for primary school students (age 9-11) Girls Code it Better (promoted by MAW employment agency to reduce gender unbalance) for secondary school girls (age 11-13) Problem solving with educational robots for secondary school students (age 12-14) Digital Creativity for authors, programmers and makers for secondary school students (age 11-14) In order to promote the planned labs and encourage students to participate, the opportunities will be presented to students, families and other stakeholders during the EU Code Week, in a series of events: October 8: “Girls in STEM” Codey Rocky lab promoted by #Makeblock for primary school girls. October 18: presentation of the “Girls Code it Better” lab to families From october 6 to 18 demonstration of devices and handcrafts made in previous laboratories to new students, with opportunities to try some tools: Makey Makey, 3D printed gifts, Scratch School Guide, Ardubike, Mbot (see https://sites.google.com/a/ic9bo.istruzioneer.it/made-in-ic9bo/). A group of undergraduates in Education Studies at Bologna University will be invited in order to illustrate them the IC9 opportunities for future internship and training on innovative teaching methodologies. By october 21 students applications for the new “Pomeriggi Digitali” labs will be collected and the first courses are planned to start on november 12. At the end of their PBL experiences (20 or 30 hours) students will have the opportunity to present their products at the School Maker Day 2019, a regional exhibit of school projects (https://www.schoolmakerday.it/).
